In this workshop brought to you by Julia (she/her), Lio (xe/xem) and Cat (they/she) from queer writing collective, Sapphic Writers, we’ll be exploring what makes sapphic (writing from the perspective of a queer woman or non-binary person) writing different from writing that comes from other positions--in particular, what makes good queer writing & representation different from mainstream/historical depictions of sapphic characters.
The first portion of the workshop will consist of an overview and guided discussion on tropes about sapphics, and then a discussion about when and how writing about sapphics gets it right. We’ll compare poems and excerpts from stories and novels, so come prepared to add to your sapphic reading list!
The second half will consist of writing activities that work on subverting toxic stereotypes in character creation and story conception. No previous writing experience or preparation required!
